In our Hidden Tales article, we take a closer look at some of the lighthouses of Greece that are worth a visit.  These are perfect destinations ideal to add to your itinerary if you are a history buff, love taking photos or enjoy hiking with a sea view.

Lighthouse of Moudari – Kythira Island

Set on the northernmost point of the island called Cape Spathi, this beautiful structure is a sight to photograph.  It became part of the Greek landscape in 1867, built under British rule.  With a height of 25 meters, it is the largest lighthouse that was constructed by the British.

Next to it you’ll find a simotologo (signal house) which was built to communicate with passing ships.  If you love amazing sea views, the Lighthouse of Moudari offers a panorama worth experiencing.  You can reach it from Plateia Ammo and then take a 400-meter-long path.

Matapa Lighthouse – Mani

Cape Tenaro is the southernmost point of mainland Greece and the southernmost point of mainland Europe. There, at this majestic and dramatic location set between the Messenian Gulf and the Laconian Gulf, the Matapa Lighthouse stands. Sitting on a sharp tip of Greece’s Laconian peninsula, this lighthouse played a key role in preventing ships from crashing into the terribly rocky coastline.

The cape itself was once an ancient Greek city called Tenarus where Greek mythology claims was the home of Hades, the god of the dead.  Spartans also built temples here and under the Byzantine empire, temples were converted to churches.

Spathi Lighthouse – Serifos Island

Standing on the tip of a rocky cape, on one of Greece’s most rugged Cycladic islands, is the Spathi Lighthouse.  Built out of stone in 1901, the 12-meter high structure was a beacon for ships sailing on the south side of the island.

The stonework around the windows and along its walls arguably make it one of the most impressive lighthouses to visit in the Cycladic islands. When visiting, look below for a little cobbled path that leads down to the sea.  Lighthouse keepers throughout time arrived by boat and trekked up hill to get to work.

Venetian Lighthouse – Chania

Chania’s Venetian lighthouse is one of the most photographed and most famous lighthouses in Greece. It is set in one of the most romantic spots in the country, Chania’s picturesque old harbor which is a popular spot for relaxing strolls and for taking beautiful photos.

This lighthouse is also one of the oldest in Greece and in the world. It was built by the Venetians in the 16th century, around the same time Chania’s Firkas fortress was built, to protect the city against the Turks.

In the early 19th century, the Egyptians restored the lighthouse to its current form and it now stands at 21 meters height with a visibility of seven miles.

Thanks to its unique look, design and position in the harbor city, this lighthouse is one of the top sights to see in Crete.
