Historical Past: An Ancient Burial Site Unearthed
During the construction period of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, archaeologists unearthed an ancient burial site dating back to the Classical period. They made a remarkable discovery of mass graves containing 80 young men buried between 675 and 650 B.C., a time marked by political upheaval in the city of Athens.
The graves were excavated 2.5 meters below the surface, uncovering a wealth of historical detail. As documented by Archaeology.org, some skeletons were found with their hands in iron shackles, suggesting that they were prisoners. Others were positioned on their backs or stomachs, indicating the chaotic nature of their deaths. One skeleton even had an arrow lodged in its shoulder, which is likely the result of an escape attempt and subsequent capture.
Archaeologists uncovered the precise date of the burials by discovering two trefoil jugs, which they identified as belonging to the late 7th century B.C. The skeletons showed excellent dental health, indicating the men were young and robust at the time of their deaths.
According to the archaeologists from Greece’s Central Archaeological Council, these men may have been followers of Cylon, an Olympic champion with grand ambitions to rule Athens. However, Cylon’s attempt to seize power was met with fierce opposition from the population. Forcing him and his supporters to take refuge at the Acropolis, which served as the city’s citadel. Although having agreed to surrender under a false promise of safety, they were massacred by a clan leader named Megacles—an event that marked a dark chapter in Athens’ history.
Other discoveries on sight included pottery, jewelry, and burial offerings, illuminating Athens’ centuries-old history.
